What any countertop RO will and will not do
A countertop RO is a precise tool, not a cure-all. Know its limits before you rely on it.
- It reduces dissolved contaminants. Reverse osmosis is the household technology that cuts fluoride, lead, PFAS and dissolved salts. How much depends on the unit, which is why certification and published test data matter more than a brand name.
- It is not a disinfection system for untreated water. If you fill from a rainwater tank, bore or creek, treat microbes separately with boiling or UV unless the unit is certified for them. Our UV steriliser guide covers that step.
- It sends water to drain. AquaTru rates the Classic at 75% efficiency, roughly 1 litre to drain for every 3 litres purified, and retailers list the same ratio for the Philips. Use the reject water for plants or cleaning rather than pouring it away.
- It strips minerals. RO water tastes flat to some people. The AquaTru Classic Alkaline adds calcium and magnesium back; other units leave the water flatter-tasting.
- The tanks need cleaning. Any countertop unit stores water at room temperature. Empty and wash the tanks on the maker’s schedule, and do not leave water sitting for days in summer.
