What’s the difference between chlorine and chloramine — and why does it matter for filter choice?
Chlorine is a single element (Cl₂) used as a disinfectant. Chloramine is chlorine combined with ammonia (monochloramine, NH₂Cl), used because it’s more stable in distribution systems. The problem for filter users: standard activated carbon (GAC) removes free chlorine very efficiently but removes chloramine at approximately 1/40th the rate — meaning a standard carbon filter may achieve less than 3% chloramine removal. Catalytic carbon, designed specifically to break the chloramine bond, achieves 95%+ removal. If your city uses chloramine (Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin), verify your filter uses catalytic carbon or an RO membrane.
